Connected Operations & IoT · Device, Edge & Connectivity

Bridge the physical world and the cloud — reliably, at the edge.

Edge architecture, gateway integration and connectivity design that works with the equipment you already have, keeps running when the network does not, and can be updated safely in the field.

Who it’s for

Built for the people accountable for the outcome.

Device, Edge & Connectivity is part of PEXIVA’s Connected Operations & IoT practice, which combines all six PEXIVA core capabilities.

Intended buyers

  • VP Engineering and OT leaders
  • Plant and facilities engineering managers
  • Connected-product and device leaders
  • Infrastructure and network architects
Business problems

What this solves.

Equipment that speaks many languages

Controllers, meters and building systems use different protocols and data formats, often undocumented.

Sites with unreliable networks

Remote, mobile or congested environments lose data unless the edge buffers and forwards it.

Devices nobody can update

Fleets ship without a safe over-the-air update path, so vulnerabilities and bugs stay in the field.

Connectivity chosen on habit

Cellular, Wi-Fi, LPWAN and wired options are not compared on coverage, power, cost and data volume.

Capabilities

Device, Edge & Connectivity — what’s included.

  • PEXIVA-deliveredPEXIVA practitioners own and perform the work.
  • PEXIVA-ledPEXIVA owns architecture, governance and delivery, with specialist contributors.
  • Partner-enabledA qualified specialist delivers a defined work package under PEXIVA program governance.
PEXIVA-led

Edge architecture

Placement of processing, storage and decision logic between device, gateway and cloud.

PEXIVA-led

Device and gateway integration

Connecting existing equipment through gateways using standard industrial and building protocols.

PEXIVA-led

Connectivity selection

Comparison of wired, Wi-Fi, cellular, LPWAN and satellite options for each site profile.

Partner-enabled

Embedded and hardware engineering

Custom device design, PCB, sensor engineering and embedded firmware.

PEXIVA leads solution architecture, cloud, data, applications, security and program delivery. Device engineering, controls, installation and local field services may be delivered with qualified specialist partners based on project requirements and geography.

Deliverables

What you receive.

  • Edge reference architecture
  • Protocol and data-model mapping
  • Gateway deployment pattern
  • Onboarding and identity workflow
  • OTA update design
  • Connectivity options analysis
  • Device and gateway specification (with partners)
Delivery approach

From equipment to a governed data stream

  1. Inventory

Catalogue equipment, protocols, network paths and constraints with your OT team.

  2. Pattern

Choose the edge pattern — thin gateway, edge analytics or local control support.

  3. Prove

Validate data access, buffering and failover on representative equipment.

  4. Template

Package the pattern so additional sites can be onboarded consistently.

Relevant use cases

Where this is typically applied.

Illustrative use cases — not descriptions of specific client deployments.

Reading PLC and historian data without changing control logic

Read-only data paths agreed with controls engineers.

Remote or mobile assets on cellular

Bandwidth-aware telemetry with local buffering.

Building systems integration

BACnet and Modbus data from HVAC, lighting and meters into one model.

Edge inference

Running a trained anomaly model locally where latency or bandwidth matters.

Security considerations

Designed in, not bolted on.

  • Each device and gateway receives a unique identity; no shared credentials.
  • Edge devices sit in segmented network zones with least-privilege outbound connections.
  • Updates are signed, staged and can be rolled back.
  • Physical access and tamper risk are considered for exposed sites.

FAQ

Device, Edge & Connectivity — frequently asked questions

Do you write embedded firmware?
Custom firmware, PCB and sensor design are partner-enabled. PEXIVA defines requirements, interfaces and update architecture, and integrates the result.
Will connecting equipment disrupt production?
Designs default to read-only data access and are reviewed with your controls team before anything is connected. Changes to control systems are made only by qualified controls engineers, with your approval.
Which edge runtimes do you work with?
Common choices include AWS IoT Greengrass, Azure IoT Operations and container-based edge stacks. The choice follows your cloud platform and operating model.
How do you choose connectivity?
By site profile: coverage, power budget, data volume, latency, cost per device and support model. Carrier contracts and SIM provisioning are arranged with connectivity partners where needed.
